Kona is a small town on the Westside of the island of Hawaii. In Hawaiian, Kona means ‘leeward’, which means the dry side of the island, which is the side of the island it is situated. Kona is famous for beautiful sunsets and aromatic coffee. It is also a perfect place for snorkeling and sport fishing. The whole area is covered by mountains so there is sunshine for most of the year.
In North Kona, you’ll find the Keahole Airport. Kona is easily accessible with direct flights from the mainland and the rest of the world. Honokohau Harbor is also located here, where you can watch whales & dolphins, and take tour boats for scuba diving & snorkeling adventures. The Kaloko-Honokohau National Historic Park is in close proximity and can be visited through a trail from the north.
Kailua-Kona town is the cultural heartbeat of Kona. Here you’ll be able to find artifact stores, restaurants and various historical sites. The restaurants serve authentic Hawaiian cuisine and in the shops, you’ll be able to buy a variety of locally-made handicrafts.
In South Kona, you’ll find the world-famous coffee plantation. You can take part in a guided tour of the plantations and get a real taste of authentic, freshly brewed Kona coffee. Kealakekua Bay and Honaunnau in South Kona are the best places for snorkeling and diving on the island. You can also visit the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and Hilo Town.
