While it may seem like the late winter months of February and March may not be an ideal time to travel, bargain hunters and those seeking to avoid travel crowds know that the early months before spring can be a perfect time to get away.

Vacationers are a little hesitant to plan a vacation during these early spring months, after all there are plenty of reasons why people don’t travel during this time. They range from winter holiday season hangover to the inability to get away from work and family this early in the year.

But if you are able to somehow make travel arrangements for this time period, there are numerous benefits that many adventure-seekers can take advantage from. Among them are lower than average hotels and airline costs to go along with special deals that many resorts and travel providers offer to boost travel during this time.

And so we compiled a series of travel tips to help you plan your early spring vacation.

Search for daily deals and all-inclusive vacation packages for the best bang for your buck. It is recommended that you search online obsessively for deals online. Most deals come in the form of all-inclusive packages and when bundled together, they can save vacationers hundreds of dollars. Pleasant Holidays vacation offers travelers packages that include hotel stays and a variety of amenities such as local tours, water sports and more.

Choose a destination that feature an ideal weather condition. Whether you live in cold climate or not, escaping to warm areas can help put your body and soul in a relaxed state. In addition, most vacationers may be sick and tired of the winter season outings such as skiing and sitting near fireplaces. So why not take advantage of warmer climate locations before the summer rush comes in?

Hawaii tops the list for popular vacation destinations throughout the year, but during February and March, the Hawaiian Islands are a favorite since temperatures during the day are almost always in the mid-80s (degrees Fahrenheit). These perfect weather conditions in Hawaii are because it experiences only two seasons all year long. Pleasant Hawaiian Holidays offers trips and packages that will make it easy to plan a vacation to Hawaii.

Do consider cruise vacations, as they provide great value for travelers. Some travel companies offer complimentary spa treatments to go along with their packages and savings of up to $2,000 per couple and free shore excursions. This is known as their least popular time of year, making it a perfect time to go for vacationers.

Vector Marketing is a brand that polarizes the populace. Vector Marketing’s recruiting and business practices have been under fire, with passionate bloggers posting harsh diatribes all over the internet and social mediasphere. I’ve worked at Vector Marketing before and I can honestly say that though these issues are things I’ve heard whispered, my experience working at Vector Marketing proved to be a wholly different experience.

It’s been said that Vector Marketing will recruit just about anyone and that their model uses their representatives to milk their close friends and relatives as the customer base. The idea is that upon seeing your high school/early college aged friend or relative struggle through a presentation as their very first job, you’ll end up pitying them and purchase some Cutco knives, if not a whole set. In my experience, this wasn’t the case at all. The key sales I made weren’t with close friends and relatives at all. The sample kit I received is used regularly by my mom to this day so the product is strong despite all the scrutiny.

Another point of the Vector Marketing model that people have taken issue with is the security deposit new representatives had to pay to get their sample set of knives used during presentations. This security deposit has since been removed but when I worked for Vector Marketing, it was still in place. This deposit came at no surprise and was made evident during the whole recruiting process. Though I did think that the cost of the deposit should have been taken out of our first paycheck at the time, the cost really was negligible and my family got an awesome set of Cutco knives at a great price.

Of course there was pressure to sell. This is a sales and marketing position and if you don’t have the drive to succeed, you aren’t going to. The district managers were paid to drive sales and inspire us to do the best we possibly could. Some people are better at this type of job than most, and in the end, Vector Marketing wasn’t for me but I can say that Vector Marketing isn’t more a scam than any other job I’ve worked at.

Through recent natural events, floods have become such a prevalent topic for home owners whether they live in high-risk areas or not. While most disasters are tough to predict, bracing for such an event can go a long way into mitigating the damage of your property from water damage.

Flood sensors can help alert different water levels in your property for immediate attention. They can be easily placed in main rooms, basements, kitchen, bathrooms and laundry rooms where appliances using a water line reside.

Additionally, property owners are facing the common problem of water leakage due to faulty systems. Ask anyone who has experienced a water leakage problem in their home or business and they will tell you that the first warning signs are crucial. In the event that an appliance overflows, these flood sensors will alert residents to the source of the problem. Serving as a watchdog in high-risk areas in your property, determining the source of the problem can help you race against time to minimize risk in your property.

The Sonin Water Alarm detects leaks and sounds an alarm during the first signs of a leakage. Its low battery setting also alerts users to change the battery over time. Different settings are available to monitor different rooms throughout a house or business for potential leaks.

The FS1 1/4-NPT FloodStop System for water heaters can alert property owners of a leaky water heater. This device shuts down the water supply to the heater and sounds an alarm. This FloodStop system is powered by an AC adaptor or batteries and is compatible with home automation or auto dialer systems. There are also FloodStop systems for dishwasher or toilets that connect to the water supply line. This system works as a valve and forces the closure of the line until problem is attended to and the system is reset. The FloodStop FS 3/8 C automatically shuts off water supply to the unit whether it is caused by a leak, broken part, overflow or a ruptured supply line. Property owners can consolidate their alarms through a relay output that can be connected to alarm panels throughout the home.

Additional things you can do to prepare for a possible flood is to make sure your rain gutters are free from debris or any buildup that accumulates over time.

A great tip for families who live in high-risk areas is to practice drills and decide on a meeting place (preferably higher ground) in the event of an emergency. Groups should be assigned so members can be accountable for other members and an emergency grab bag should be easy and accessible in the event that your property becomes uninhabitable.

Lastly, property owners should review their insurance policy in the event of a flood. Many insurance plans in America do not include floods as part of their coverage. There is no doubt that flood damage can be costly, can ruin your property and take years to repair. Becoming proactive in protecting your investment can greatly minimize the risk of catastrophic damage. For similar home security equipment and alarm systems, Home Security Store has everything you need to protect your home or business.

Students at the University of Southern Mississippi just took a giant leap forward when it comes to learning in the digital age. The University announced plans to provide Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 to students in the Honors program this fall.

A groundbreaking initiative for the Honors program, this project fits in line with some of the fundamental values of university leadership. Along with active learning courses designed to put into practice theory and experience, Honors College students are part of smaller classes which emphasize more interaction with professors. By providing tablets and sharing the same operating system, students and educators can easily share video, audio and other content that can take education beyond the classroom.

The tablets are pre-loaded with Blackboard Mobile which contains course syllabi, references, schedules, contact information, class message boards, e-textbooks and more. These tablets provide the tools necessary to having a centralized platform where ideas can be shared and students can gather all the information needed to not only complete the course, but excel in it as well.

University President Dr. Martha D. Saunders took office in 2007 and stresses creating a climate for academic success. By launching this initiative in the Honors program, Southern Miss is leading the way in implementing a learning model using the latest technology to engage students to learn more efficiently.

Not only is Saunders a forward-thinking president, but she has experience to back it up with a 30-year career in higher education. She is a role model for students and is a campus leader for her use of social media with an active blog and Twitter (@MarthaSaunders). Additionally, Saunders is considered a leader among women university presidents and is recognized for her expertise in public relations and branding and is an APR (Accredited Public Relations) professional.

The new millennium generation is seemingly born with social media and computing as an inherent trait. There’s no doubt that arming them with cloud computing through a versatile tablet will create and sustain a culture more perceptive to critical thinking and lifelong learning. This initiative is a great first step for this campus and is a wonderful model for other campuses to follow.

If you’re like the millions of Americans who are planning to go on vacation this summer, you’ll want to have the latest available information before you go. Here are some helpful tech travel tips to consider before you leave that can prepare you to get the most fun out of your getaway or avoid the unexpected hiccups during your trip.

Helpful Smartphone Apps – Americans are successfully integrating smartphones with their everyday lives and the travel industry is no different. If you know where to look there are some great mobile applications available that can make life a little bit easier for travelers.

FlightTrack Pro for the iPhone provides everything a user needs to track the status of their flights in real-time. This app is the most comprehensive flight tracker and allows users to synchronize their itineraries with other apps. Our favorite feature of this app is the layout of over 5,000 airports and flight delay alerts.

When it comes to weather, knowing precisely how the weather is going to be in a particular region can mean the difference between a good time and a bummer trip. Weather.com is always a favorite, and WeatherBug for Android, iPhone and Blackberry users provide current conditions, radar as well as the forecast for your particular destination. What makes this app great is its full integration with mobile operating systems and its precise weather conditions for GPS locations.

Traveling overseas? Don’t leave the U.S. borders without the World Customs & Cultures app. This iPhone app provides a quick snapshot of laws such as legal drinking age or smoking laws of the country you are visiting.

Many destinations in the U.S. or abroad have their own app to clue in guests and travelers of events happening in the area. For example, Florida Beach Resort Sandestin, offers vacationers their own Apple iPhone and Android app, Explore Sandestin. This 2,400-acre white-sand beach resort offers multiple bay-front properties, four championship golf courses, 19 swimming pools, various water sports and engaging children’s activities that benefit from this app’s role as a guide to local events. In fact many resorts are active participants in the world of social media through photo-sharing and networking activities for the whole family.

Tablets – If you’re considering traveling for an extended period of time, ditch your phone for a tablet instead. This convenient hybrid between a smartphone and a laptop makes for the perfect travel companion for e-reading and computing.

Reviews, Blogs and Social Media – Travelers in 2011 have a great asset available to them when it comes to traveling: social media. It’s important that when you are researching hotels, restaurants or attractions you should collectively get an idea of what the majority of people are saying about that particular establishment and not just focus on individual reviews. Sites like Facebook, Twitter, Yelp, TripAdvisor and Concierge can help you get a better idea of your destination before your arrival.

AAA Fuel Cost Calculator – If you’re planning to drive to your destination, you can save a little money and get accurate gas costs through this great tool from the Auto Club.

Suspend Home Subscriptions – In the past we put a vacation hold on all incoming mail or suspended newspaper subscriptions while we were on vacation. But did you know that Internet retailers such as Netflix and Hulu Plus allow subscribers to temporarily suspend their services?

And lastly, according to Ian Hamilton, a technology reporter for The Orange County Register, the No. 1 tech travel tip is to download everything you can to your mobile devices before you leave the house.

Whether it’s traveling to the beach, the mountains or overseas, Hamilton emphasizes that travelers can save on their data plans and be armed with the latest information while on the road. It’s also good to have a sure bet, because sometimes you can’t depend on Wi-Fi or cellular coverage. Hamilton said that savvy travelers should download apps, games, books, documents or maps at home before the trip, and that lots of mobile apps offer offline access to their content if you are stuck in a dead zone.

Memorial Day weekend is a great way to kick off the start of the summer season, but before we get wrapped up in all that is happening this summer, this holiday weekend marks a special place for Americans this year. The 10th year anniversary of September 11th is upon us and the most wanted man behind the attacks was brought down by American Special Forces just a couple of months ago. More than anything, we should all take the time to reflect on how the world has changed this past decade.

Historically, Memorial Day was established shortly after the Civil War as a day to decorate the graves of soldiers. It is believed that this time of the year was chosen because flowers are in full bloom, making it an ideal time to memorialize those that sacrificed their livelihoods so that we can enjoy our freedoms. If you are in the middle of planning your three-day weekend, here are some key things to consider for an overall enjoyable experience.

1. Avoid political bickering toward the government.

The response shortly after Osama Bin Laden’s death was nothing short of remarkable. Americans took to the streets to show their patriotic spirit – let it continue for Memorial Day.

2. Avoid getting stuck in traffic.

Memorial Day marks the first holiday weekend of the summer travel season and many Americans are sure to hit the road. If you are planning to drive to your destination, check traffic conditions, alternate routes and adjust your time of departure to ensure that you won’t be stuck in traffic for long periods of time. Here’s a tip: Vision Airlines is a recently launched leisure carrier based out of Destin, Florida and they are offering great rates for direct flights to weekend destinations. According to USA Today, Vision is keeping things simple by allowing passengers to fly directly to a destination, ideal for weekend getaways.

3. Avoid party destinations.

According to Priceline’s Memorial Day Top 50 list for 2011, popular destinations are dispersed based on what section of the country you live in. In the East Coast, Chicago, New York City and Providence tops the list, while West Coast residents will be setting their sights on Las Vegas. Here’s a tip: the cruise industry is seeing a decline in interest and thus prices reflect these changes if you know where to look. All-Travel.com offers a variety of inclusive packages that will sweep you away into the sea at an affordable price.

4. Avoid staying at home and watching TV.

Don’t kick off the summer season by staying indoors. Enjoy the great weather by visiting a parade, museum or honor fallen service members by visiting memorials in your town.

5. Avoid frivolous shopping.

This weekend is not Black Friday – while there may be a ton of deals available, they are relegated to mattresses and cars for some reason.

6. Avoid being alone.

Consider immersing yourself with family and friends (this weekend is also known as an unofficial family holiday). See them before you take off for the summer.

7. Avoid heavy drinking (might be tough when you’re with family members).

This holiday weekend is also not New Year’s Eve, St. Patrick’s Day or Cinco de Mayo. Here’s a tip: consider wine tasting instead and take your friends and family out for a weekend of regulated drinking.

8. Avoid eating out the whole weekend.

Consider grilling! Fire up your barbeque and enjoy eating outdoors.

9. Avoid using fireworks – this is not the Fourth of July.

But do consider watching it at some point this weekend. Nothing is more American than a put-together fireworks show. Leave this task to the professionals. Many resorts and communities will offer fireworks this holiday weekend.

10. Avoid emails, social media.

Unplug for just one weekend and experience the freedom of living in the moment. You don’t need to check-in to various places, they’re probably out with their families and friends anyway and many won’t be checking your status updates.

11. Avoid celebrating the time off.

Switch the focus from your personal livelihoods to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

5 Alternative Places to Visit

Ground Zero, New York City, NY – While it may be tough to get here during this weekend, it’s a trip worth making to memorialize those who lost their lives on September 11th, 2001.

Pearl Harbor, HI – If you are thinking of going on an extended family vacation, a Hawaiian cruise to visit Pearl Harbor and pay respects to those who lost their lives makes for a memorable trip.

Gettysburg, PA – Did you know that this year marks the 150th anniversary of the Civil War? Take a weekend trip to this picturesque town and take in the history.

Flight 93 Memorial Park, Stoystown, PA – Pay respects to those who heroically steered the plane away from innocent lives in this open field-turned state park where the plane crashed.

Yellowstone National Park – Take in the natural beauty that exists in this famed state park.

Memorial Day is a great time for barbeques, family gatherings and picnics. Oddly enough, it is also known as the best weekend out of the year to buy a mattress. We delved back into the history of this phenomenon and here’s what we discovered:

New Stock Shipments

May is around the time where mattress retailers receive stock and new models to replace older models. Every year, major mattress producers tweak their line of products for beds and box springs. Putting together a bed has become a booming industry and for those who are sleep deprived, the latest technology can go a long ways into a better night’s sleep.

Stock Liquidation

Conversely, retailers will look towards Memorial Day weekend as the time where they eagerly slash prices to get rid of older products. Whether you’re bargain hunting or awaiting the latest products, this holiday weekend equates to a high traffic season for mattress shoppers. Be sure to do your homework when it comes to finding the right mattress for your body type before you go mattress hunting.

Tax Refunds

April 15 is the due date of taxes in the U.S. and depending on your financial standing you may have lost or gained extra income on that day. For Americans who received extra income, the late spring months are looked upon as a high consumer spending season. Recent trends suggest big purchases as opposed to smaller purchases which go in the direction of major appliances, car purchases and mattresses.

High-Turnover Rate

Unlike a car that stays in our grasps for well over 10 years, mattresses have a lifespan of about five to eight years according to industry experts. Due to dead skin buildup, dirt and oil from our bodily functions, mattresses are encouraged to be inspected and replaced for optimum sleep support.

Home Comfort Factor

One of the many lessons Americans have learned during this recent economic downturn was to go out less, thus spending a lot of time indoors. This trend was reflected in strong HDTV sales towards the end of 2010 along with cable and satellite TV subscription. This also led to strong sales of home furnishings such as sofas and mattresses.

Planning a wedding in harsh economic times can be tough, but there are lots of ways to stretch your dollar a bit further. Here are the top 5 ways to have your wedding look like a million bucks without breaking the bank:

5. Plan Your Wedding “Off-Season”:

June through August is the wedding season’s typically busiest months, and vendors use this to raise prices. But you can beat the mark-ups by scheduling “off-season.” Booking your wedding October through March will save you loads on the venue, flowers, etc. as vendors will be willing to make deals during their slowest months. Take advantage of fall’s beautiful and natural color scheme, and you’ll find yourself saving huge.

4. Alternative Metal Wedding Bands:

The price of gold just keeps skyrocketing with no end in sight. Alternative metals like tungsten wedding bands offer many of the same great wedding ring styles with the added benefit of being highly scratch-resistant and bargain priced in comparison to 18k gold rings. And if you just can’t let go of having a traditional metal for your wedding band, tungsten wedding bands also come with inlays of 18k gold, platinum and silver as well. Have the best of both worlds at a fraction of the cost.

3. Nix the DJ:

Let’s be honest. The wedding DJ is really just a glorified iPod isn’t he? So, why spend so much on him? Sit down with your fiancé and program a playlist you and your guests will enjoy. Most wedding venues will already have some form of speaker system capable of being hooked up to a computer or iPod allowing you to be your own DJ. It’s almost effortless and will save you loads.

Just hit “play” and enjoy!

2. Scour the Web:

The Internet is overflowing with wedding deals. You name it, they got it. From flowers, to party favors and bridesmaids gifts…. there are deals, promotions and coupon codes everywhere. So don’t be afraid to look around discount and retail sites for the best bargains.

1. “Knock-Offs” can be a Girl’s Best Friend:

What’s in a name anyways? Designer dresses are beautiful but are you paying for the name or the dress? There are lots of discount retailers selling almost identical “knock-offs” of the popular designer dresses, and in some cases they look even better! Don’t let the name on the tag sway you. You’ll still look like a million bucks in these discount designs.

We won’t tell anyone it’s a “knock-off,” if you won’t.
