One big selling point of Vector Marketing, the direct sales firm that markets Cutco Cutlery (I used to be involved myself quite a long time ago), is that the training given to their thousands of sales representatives is universally appreciated and when included on a resume, demands respect. I’ll admit it – I was a skeptic at first. Maybe it’s because I wasn’t sold on the price point of the product or I wasn’t cut out for sales (yeah, that’s probably it) but the Vector methodology just didn’t mesh well with my personality and my sales record clearly reflected that. I realize that sales is a career that requires a lot of ambition and confidence and that’s just something I didn’t have a whole lot of when I was just 17 years of age.

That doesn’t mean it doesn’t work for others though. Campus Relations Manager for Vector Marketing, Cadence Barr, was presented the “Most Valuable Person 2008” award last year from the Mountain/Pacific Association of Colleges and Employers (MPACE). This prestigious award is presented each year to one employer and one career center person, recognizing their significant contribution to their organization. The skills that Vector Marketing has ingrained in Cady (interpersonal relations, directed rapport and self-confidence) are the same set of skills that have set her apart from competition and helped her win this award.

“I feel honored to receive this award from MPACE. I have benefited personally and professionally from my involvement with the organization. Vector Marketing has always been dedicated to helping college students develop the business skills they will need to succeed in their future careers,” said Barr upon receiving the award.

After a three year investigation and countless complaints, a south Florida man will spend 5 1/2 years behind bars for running one of the largest eBay scams in the history of eBay. The details of the massive operation include, hundreds of auction accounts, multiple identities and constantly changing PO Boxes.

In 2006, Jonathan Harkness bid and won a flashlight from an eBay seller. He sent $90 via money order, however, to his disappointment he never received his high tech flashlight. He was ripped off like so many other non suspecting users of eBay.

In 2007, Harkness wrote his congressman, describing the scam and alerting him that this may be part of a bigger scam. Rep. Adam Smith urged the U.S. Postal Inspection Service to investigate.

After a long three year investigation, Nilton Rossoni, 50, a Brazilian businessman with multiple aliases living in South Florida, was sentenced to 5 ½ years in federal prison for running one of the biggest eBay scams in history.

Rossoni was convicted of hauling in $717,000 from more than 5,500 eBay buyers, by creating at least 260 different eBay accounts, and using dozens of e-mail addresses with Yahoo, Google and AOL, as well as nearly 60 private postal boxes. It’s possible that Rossoni actually scammed even more users, utilizing sites other than eBay, however, the prosecution was able to gather enough evidence to get a strong conviction in this case.

This scam took place between 2003 – 2008 while he sold hundreds of different items. He maintained a strong reputation by fabricating fake buyer feedback that was positive. He also insisted on money orders or cash, and asked users not to send money via Paypal.

It’s now 2010 and people are more educated and understand Paypal helps prevent fraud. When you send cash to someone you have never met, you are taking quite a leap of faith. Be sure to always use Paypal or a similar service when sending money to someone online.

The world’s tallest skyscraper has unexpectedly closed to the public a month after its lavish opening, disappointing tourists headed for the observation deck and casting doubt over plans to welcome its first permanent occupants in the coming weeks.

Dubai World's Largest BuildingElectrical problems are at least partly to blame for the closure of the Burj Khalifa’s viewing platform – the only part of the half-mile high tower open yet. But a lack of information from the spire’s owner left it unclear whether the rest of the largely empty building – including dozens of elevators meant to whisk visitors to the tower’s more than 160 floors – was affected by the shutdown.

So far only half of the building is truly complete and the total cost was around $1.5 Billion USD. Dubai is having serious money problems and has already told everyone holding debt from Dubai that they will not back any of it.

Facebook Cash Scam

Over the past few years  social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter have given unprecedented access to people’s private lives. More and more personal information is revealed through photos, status updates and conversations that are all being documented online. Last week, the Serious Fraud Office of London (SFO) warned that Facebook and Twitter are being used to harvest users’ personal financial details,

“The public should be aware of the predatory nature of fraudsters and be careful about revealing personal information on social-networking sites, as this has become a primary method of harvesting information and targeting victims,” SFO said.

In a joint venture between London police and Financial Services Authority, over 10,000 people were notified that their names were on a “master list” that contained a range of personal information, that might include: names, address, phone number, place of business, income and relationship status. While this is the only reported list, it’s quite possible thousands more were already victims of this latest cash scam.

Vector MarketingI recently stumbled upon an article in North County Times about the surprisingly burgeoning specialty knife sales of Cutco Cutlery, marketed by Vector Marketing. The recent recession has left people as frugal as ever. I know I’ve cut down on a lot of my own spending, only buying things that I deem absolutely necessary, so I assumed that luxury knife sales would be at an all-time low, but Vector Marketing has once again proved its staying power by withstanding the test of time.

Vector Marketing is a company founded on the hard work ethic of their independent contractors working out of their regional offices all over the country. The company is built on a top-notch product perfectly complimented with a direct-sales initiative that enables them to recreate the rapport of a friendly, neighborhood salesperson that knows your family, understands your needs and will happily provide them.

Vector Marketing has recently found success for a couple key reasons. One of them is increased interest in cooking at home. Instead of choosing to eat out at an expensive restaurant, people are choosing to prepare their meals at home, often from scratch, to save money. Additionally, the increasing popularity of cooking shows on Food Network suggests that people not only cook at home out of necessity but people are learning to enjoy cooking at home and desire to expand their knowledge of it. Owning a decent set of knives, then, becomes a priority. Cutco’s “forever” guarantee helps because people feel like they are making a one-time investment that guarantees a sturdy set of premium kitchen knives in their homes for generations to come.

By sticking to a proven formula, Vector Marketing has found success in an unlikely place: the frugality of the battered American consumer. If I didn’t already own a set of trusty Cutco knives, I might even consider investing in a set myself, despite the low balance in my checking account.

Evil Google LogoWe all know Google’s mantra to “do no evil,” but according to Apple’s Steve Jobs, this is “bullshit.” Up until today, Google was looking squeaky clean and people were wondering what Steven Jobs was ranting about when he called Google’s bluff.

Today Google released multitouch for the Nexus One smart phone. This includes pinch-to-zoom functionality to the phone’s Browser, Gallery and Map applications. When the Nexus One was first released, this was one of the large disappointments among users, the lack of multitouch.

So why does this make Google evil?

Tesla RoadsterTesla Motors, the electronic car company filed paperwork signaling intent to go public, selling stock in an initial public offering (IPO). While no date has been set, the SEC paperwork filed indicated an offering of $100 Million.

Tesla Motors is most famous for making the first high performance electronic sports car. These cars are currently priced around $100,000 and have become a favorite among the silicon valley elites. Years ago silicon tycoons started placing orders before the first cars ever rolled off the assembly lines.

According to filed documents, Tesla Motors recorded sales of some $93.4 million in the first three quarters of 2009. Decent sales for a new auto company but losses were $31.5 million on those sales. This was an improvement over the same period as the year before when they lost over $50 million.

The underwriters include huge investment banks like JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs, and Morgan Stanley. If this IPO takes place in 2010, expect it to be one of the more exciting IPOs as silicon valley enters the auto industry.

air-n-water_wall-heaterLow temperatures during the winter can really make living comfortably difficult, so that’s why wall heaters have gained huge popularity in homes and offices. Wall heaters can be mounted directly on the surface of the wall or recessed into the wall, thus also save valuable floor space. They are very energy efficient and can heat areas up to 500 square feet depending on the amount of wattage the wall heater provides.

Wall heaters offer many features that can make usage easy, safe, convenient, and energy efficient. Most electric wall heaters feature a built-in thermostat that controls the room temperature and a frost protection setting that automatically turns on unit at 41° F. An automatic reset high limit protection feature offers safety, as does the thermal safety switch that disconnects from power in the event of blocked ventilation or overheating. Some wall heaters also include a timer replacing wall switches, single or multi-gang timers and automatically limit the “on” time for heater. Another feature that makes wall heaters even more convenient to use is the remote control feature that some wall heaters include.

How to choose the correct wall heater for your home or office?
• Installation – Before choosing a wall heater first check the installation requirement at your home or office. Do you need a gas supply or only electricity for the wall heater?
• Safety – Highly important if you have children at home. You want to install a safe system fitted with all necessary safety features.
• Noise – Some wall heaters can be noisy so choose wisely if this will be a problem.

Keep these tips in mind and enjoy energy efficient heat this winter.

Microsoft LogoLast year sales were down along with the economy, but computers sales and a new operating system by Microsoft have elevated profits in the 4th Qrt of 2009.

For its most recent quarter, Microsoft saw a 60% rise in earnings. Revenue grew 13% to $19 billion USD, lifting earnings to $6.7 billion. Analysts had expected $17.9 billion in revenue.

Microsoft beat the street estimate and reported strong earnings to match other companies such as Dell and Apple. With the launch of Windows 7, Microsoft is expected to continue to have strong sales, but the economy could have other plans. While the overall tech industry is looking better, a full recovery may not be in the cards for 2010.

green apple logoApple’s chief executive Steve Jobs announced that the company’s annual revenues are now beyond $50 billion, but indicated that even more is in the pipeline to get excited about.

“If you annualize our quarterly revenue, it’s surprising that Apple is now a $50+ billion company,” Jobs said. “The new products we are planning to release this year are very strong, starting this week with a major new product that we’re really excited about.”

Apple sold 3.36 million Macs, including more than 2.1 million notebooks. That represented 33% growth in Mac sales, compared to an industry-wide 17% growth in PCs reported by IDG. Desktop sales reached 70% growth year over year thanks to the popular new iMac models. Apple’s CFO Tim Cook detailed even greater growth rates in Mac sales internationally.

It also sold 21 million iPods and 8.74 million iPhones, a record number of new mobile devices for the company. Apple retained roughly 70% market share in the global MP3 market with iPods; growth in the iPod touch reached 55%, while iPhones amounted to a 100% increase in sales over the previous quarter, comparing very favorably to Canalys’ data showing industry smartphone growth at around 30%.

Apple currently has $40 Billion in cash and grew by $5 Billion from the last quarter alone. This cash is one big reason that Apple has a $180 Billion market value according to Steve Jobs. It also gives Apple more cash than Microsoft and makes Apple one of the richest companies in the world.

Apple has big plans to announce later this week, many expect the announcement to include the Apple tablet that has been rumored for many years.
